I'm a huge Fan of Lady Windermere
Oscar Wilde Season is underway in London. Playing at the Vaudeville Theatre, Lady Windermere’s Fan is taking its turn, this time directed by the delightful Kathy Burke. Given that this script is well over 100 years old, can it have new life breathed into it? Of course, one draw is the superb Jennifer Saunders, back in the West End after 25 years. It’s got a stellar cast, an inviting venue and of course Ms Burke directing it – what is not to love? I set out below five reasons this needs to be seen before it disappears from the stage.

Lady Windermere's Fan: a charming and funny spectacle
The Vaudeville Theatre’s Oscar Wilde season, a quartet of his best-known plays, opened with Kathy Burke’s production of his 1892 comedy, Lady Windermere’s Fan. It is, in turn, broad, farcical, uproarious and cloyingly sentimental – a Victorian melodrama infused with Wilde’s famous dry wit, that plays today as a quaint and enjoyable museum piece. The writer’s musings on embryonic gender politics and the hypocrisy of high society can be found grafted to the oldest of plots, namely a scandalising family secret.

Classic Spring's Oscar Wilde Season continues to captivate Vaudeville audiences
Now's your last chance to see the "sparkling production" (London Theatre) of Lady Windermere's Fan, directed by Kathy Burke and featuring a "scene-stealing" (The Stage) performance by Jennifer Saunders. The Oscar Wilde season will continue with three more Victorian tales by the late Irish playwright: The Selfish Giant, An Ideal Husband, and The Importance of Being Earnest.
