My Hart was in my mouth when I watched Miranda take a turn as Miss Hannigan. I Revelled in watching a 6’2 man in drag when Craig Revel-Horwood had a short residency at the Piccadilly. Now bringing another perspective to Annie, running until 18 February 2018 is the delightful Meera Syal fully at home in the character of Miss Hannigan.

Most musical theatre fans are familiar with Annie the musical, which was first performed on Broadway in 1977, with its West End debut in the following year. Since then, there have been West End revivals in almost every decade. This year saw the most recent revival with stars from TV, comedy, dance and stage in the tragi-comic role of Miss Hannigan.

Annie is a firm festive favourite. A staple of the Christmas TV schedules, it is a musical that has found its place. It is currently playing at the Piccadilly Theatre in a new incarnation directed by Nikoli Foster and choreographed by Nick Winston.

Seated in the surprisingly comfortable plush seats of the Royal Circle in the Piccadilly Theatre, I was very impressed by the intricate stage design, striking me as almost an echo of the current Matilda set. With two shows currently being performed on the West End, heavily featuring younger performers, I was hoping Annie would stand its ground.

Children have always been a huge part of theatre, but I think it is now safe to say that their talent and enthusiasm is slowly dominating the West End, and with good reason too.
Currently in the West End, we have maggots, orphans, rock stars, lions cubs and mini MJs. Along with touring ballerinas and the plucky pickpocketers opening this summer at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre – I think the loudest song needs to go to the children who are smashing these West End productions, night after night.
