Synopsis:

La traviata is one of Verdi’s most popular operas and one of his most loved, based on La Dame aux camélias. It is a great combination of dramatic story and instantly memorable music. For this Royal Opera revival, star soprano Angela Gheorghiu returns to the title role and the production which brought her such international fame and acclaim when the staging was new. Director Richard Eyre’s interpretation brings the surface elegance of 19th-century Parisian society to life, made especially vivid through Bob Crowley’s sumptuous designs. But beneath the glamour lies danger and darkness, swiftly revealed to be at the tragic heart of the drama.

Powerful emotions beautifully portrayed have earned La traviata its place as one of the greatest operas of all time. And these few performances also bring together an international cast, a leading conductor, and the supremely accomplished Royal Opera Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. It is no surprise that this revival is a highlight of the Royal Opera Season.
